Elon Musk, the world’s richest man (for those who didn’t already know), has announced that his company, Neuralink, implanted a chip into a human brain. What does this mean, and more importantly, how long until all of us are walking around with computer chips inside our heads?
Neuralink’s Computer Chips
On Sunday, January 28th, Elon Posted on X that the operation went well and that the patient was recovering.
Putting computer chips into human brains could be a potential solution for various neurological disorders. Regardless, this represents a huge milestone in the development of this transformative technology.
BEYOND THE RECOVERY, MUSK MENTIONED THAT “INITIAL RESULTS SHOW PROMISING NEURON SPIKE DETECTION”
The trial implanted the chip, surgically by robot, into the part of the brain that controls the intention to move. This chip detects neuron spikes and sends the signals to an app that allows the patient to control a computer cursor and keyboard…
With their thoughts alone.
Right now, the product’s initial users will be individuals who have lost use of their limbs.
This sounds like something right out of a sci-fi novel…
But how have the trials gone so far?
Previous Tests
Neuralink has been working on bridging the gap between technology and the human body for 50 years. It finally received FDA approval for human clinical trials in May 2023.
But before it was FDA-approved, they’ve been testing the computer chips on lab monkeys, which has drawn many critiques.
In December 2022, Neuralink employees spoke out about the company rushing to market. Musk was pressuring employees to work on crunch time, which led to many monkey casualties.
Before that, a monkey being tested with the tech died after an attempt at playing the game Pong.
IT COMES AS A SHOCK TO ABSOLUTELY NO ONE THAT ELON MUSK’S OBSESSION WITH RUSHING PLANS LED TO CONTROVERSY.
After all, this is the same guy who scared off advertisers from X, formerly known as Twitter…
For allowing hate speech alongside their ads.Â
Until we get updates from the man himself, all we can do is wait and ask ourselves…
Are computer chips going to actually have the potential to help people…
Or is this project one big Frankenstein-esque failure?
Be Great,
